Leylandii conifers are one of the UK’s most popular choices for creating a fast-growing, evergreen garden hedge. They are ideal for providing privacy, screening unwanted views, reducing wind and creating an attractive natural boundary around your garden.

Whether you are planting smaller P9 Leylandii plants or more established 2-litre pot-grown conifers, following the correct planting and spacing advice will help you create a healthy, dense Leylandii hedge.

At Meredith Nurseries, we want to help you get the best results from your new hedging plants. Follow our simple step-by-step guide below.

🌱 1. Choosing Between P9 and 2 Litre Leylandii

Both pot sizes are suitable for creating a Leylandii hedge.

**P9 Leylandii Conifers**

– Smaller, young plants supplied in P9 pots.

– An economical option for planting longer hedge runs.

– Ideal if you are happy to allow the hedge more time to establish and grow.

– Require regular watering while establishing.

**2 Litre Leylandii Conifers**

– Larger, more established plants.

– A good choice if you want a slightly more developed hedge from the beginning.

– Generally offer a more substantial starting plant.

– Can provide a quicker visual screen, depending on plant size and growing conditions.

πŸ“ 2. How Far Apart Should You Plant Leylandii?

Correct spacing is important when creating a thick, healthy evergreen hedge.

For a single-row Leylandii hedge, we recommend the following approximate planting distances:

**P9 Pots**

– Plant approximately 45–60cm apart.

– Suitable for creating a continuous hedge as the plants mature.

**2 Litre Pots**

– Plant approximately 60–75cm apart.

– Allow enough room for the plants to develop while gradually joining together.

Avoid planting too close together, as overcrowding can lead to competition for water, nutrients and light.

For a typical 10-metre hedge, you may need approximately:

– P9 pots: 17–23 plants.

– 2 litre pots: 14–17 plants.

These are estimates based on the spacing above.

πŸͺ΄ 3. Preparing the Ground

Before planting your Leylandii conifers, prepare the ground properly.

  1. Remove weeds, grass and unwanted vegetation from the planting area.
  2. Dig over the soil to loosen it and improve drainage.
  3. Remove large stones and old roots.
  4. Add well-rotted organic matter if your soil needs improvement.
  5. Make sure the planting area is not waterlogged.

Leylandii prefer fertile, well-drained soil and grow best in a sunny or partially shaded position.

🌳 4. How to Plant P9 Leylandii Conifers

  1. Water the P9 plants thoroughly before planting.
  2. Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball.
  3. Carefully remove the plant from its pot.
  4. Place the plant into the hole, keeping the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
  5. Backfill with soil and gently firm around the roots.
  6. Water thoroughly after planting.
  7. Apply a layer of mulch around the plants, keeping it away from the stems.

Smaller P9 plants need particular attention to watering while their roots establish.

🌲 5. How to Plant 2 Litre Leylandii Conifers

The planting process is very similar for 2-litre plants.

  1. Water the plants well before removing them from their pots.
  2. Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball and approximately the same depth.
  3. Gently remove the plant from its container.
  4. Loosen any tightly circling roots around the outside of the root ball.
  5. Position the plant upright with the top of the root ball level with the soil.
  6. Backfill and gently firm the soil around the plant.
  7. Water generously to settle the soil around the roots.

Make sure each plant is positioned at the same depth as it was growing in its pot.

πŸ’§ 6. Watering and Aftercare

Watering is one of the most important parts of successfully establishing a Leylandii hedge.

During the first growing season:

– Water regularly, particularly during dry or warm weather.

– Check the soil around the roots to make sure it does not dry out.

– Avoid waterlogging the planting area.

– Keep weeds and grass away from the base of the plants.

– Apply mulch to help retain moisture.

P9 plants may dry out more quickly because of their smaller root systems, so check them regularly.

Once established, Leylandii are generally more tolerant of short dry periods, although prolonged drought can still affect their growth.

βœ‚οΈ 7. Trimming and Maintaining Your Leylandii Hedge

Leylandii are fast-growing conifers and benefit from regular maintenance.

– Allow young plants to establish before carrying out significant trimming.

– Lightly trim the sides to encourage a dense, neat hedge.

– Avoid cutting back into old brown wood, as Leylandii may not regenerate from this.

– Trim the hedge regularly to maintain your desired height and width.

– Avoid heavy trimming during very hot or dry weather.

Always check the nesting bird season and inspect for active nests before trimming.

⏳ 8. How Long Will It Take to Create a Leylandii Hedge?

The time required depends on the initial plant size, spacing, soil quality, weather and growing conditions.

P9 plants will generally take longer to create a substantial screen than larger 2-litre plants.

With suitable planting, watering and regular maintenance, Leylandii can develop into an attractive, dense evergreen hedge.

Remember that Leylandii can grow very large if left untrimmed, so plan your hedge height and maintenance before planting.
